🌟 Introduction: What Are You Letting In?

Jesus’ words in Matthew 6:22 reveal a profound spiritual principle: our eyes are more than physical organs—they are portals. What we see doesn’t just impact our thoughts—it shapes our spirit, our emotions, our worldview. Our eyes influence who we become.

As we explore the depth of this verse, I’ve chosen to include reflections from two spiritual giants—Billy Graham and Luis Palau. These men faithfully preached the truth of the Gospel to generations across the globe. Their voices, though now at rest, still speak with clarity and conviction. Like many, I’ve been deeply blessed by their teachings, and I share their insights here as a way of honoring their legacy and continuing the light they so boldly carried.

🧠 1. Scientific Insight: Why Vision Shapes Us

Scientific studies have shown that repeated exposure to violent media can lead to emotional desensitization in adolescents, contributing to decreased empathy and increased aggression. (NIH Study)

The American Psychological Association also notes that early exposure to television violence correlates with aggressive behavior and decreased sensitivity to real-world suffering. (APA Report)

This aligns with Jesus' teaching: what we see is not neutral—it either brings light or darkness into our being.

📰 2. Spiritual Focus: The Healthy Eye

In his sermon "Visibility Zero," Billy Graham emphasized the importance of spiritual sight:

"Because the Bible says you have two sets of eyes. You have physical eyes, in which you can see, and you have spiritual eyes. And you can see physically, but you may not be able to see spiritually. And spiritual blindness affects everyone in this audience."

He warned that spiritual blindness keeps us from truly knowing God, reinforcing the need to keep our spiritual eyes healthy and focused on Christ.

📖 Proverbs 4:25 (NLT): "Look straight ahead, and fix your eyes on what lies before you."

🖥️ 3. Media and Society: The Power of Repeated Exposure

Society uses visuals to influence beliefs and behaviors:

  • Normalize sin: TV and social media often make sexual immorality seem acceptable or even admirable.

  • Redefine morality: Popular culture increasingly promotes the idea that truth is relative.

  • Promote materialism: Advertising equates happiness with wealth, beauty, and possessions.

  • Undermine godly values: Faith is often mocked or portrayed as irrelevant in mainstream media.

These examples show how what we see repeatedly becomes what we accept. Jesus knew this truth when He spoke of the eye as the lamp of the body.

🔍 4. A Covenant With Our Eyes

In Job 31:1, Job says, "I made a covenant with my eyes not to look with lust at a young woman."

Billy Graham frequently quoted this verse and stated:

"The Bible says he is blind spiritually. And our world leaders are groping. I listen to some of these things on television from some of our world leaders and I'm amazed at the spiritual blindness."

This underscores the importance of maintaining spiritual vision to navigate a world filled with distraction and temptation.

📖 Psalm 101:3 (NLT): "I will refuse to look at anything vile and vulgar."

❤️ 5. Fixing Our Gaze on Jesus

Luis Palau, in his message "Keep Your Eyes on Jesus," urges believers to:

"Keep your eyes on Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith. Don't let the distractions of this world divert your gaze from Him."

This reflects the heart of Matthew 6:22. A healthy eye stays fixed on what is pure, eternal, and true—and that Person is Jesus.

📖 Hebrews 12:2 (NLT): "We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith."

🙏 Prayer

Lord, open my spiritual eyes. Heal the places in me where I’ve allowed darkness to enter. Make my vision single—focused only on You. Help me guard my eyes and guide the next generation to see clearly in a world full of distortion. Fill me with Your light, that I may reflect You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
