Hebrews 5:14
Some beliefs sound biblical because we have heard them repeated for years. This Scripture in Motion reflection on Hebrews 5:14 gives us a simple way to examine what we hear before allowing it to shape our understanding of God.

📖 This Week’s Scripture
📖 Hebrews 5:14
“But solid food is for those who are mature, who through training have the skill to recognize the difference between right and wrong.”
Dear Friend,
Have you ever heard someone say, “God will never give you more than you can handle”? It sounds encouraging and is often repeated as though it came directly from the Bible.
But that is not what Scripture says.
🌿 This belief usually comes from a misunderstanding of 1 Corinthians 10:13. That passage promises that God will provide a way to resist temptation. It does not promise that every hardship will remain within our personal ability to manage. Paul openly described facing trouble that was beyond his own strength. He explained that the experience taught him to stop relying on himself and rely on God instead.
🌿 Accepting a mistaken statement as Scripture can affect how we see God and ourselves. When life becomes more than we can handle, we may wonder why we are struggling. We might believe we are weak, failing spiritually, or disappointing God because we cannot hold everything together. We may even distance ourselves from Him when we need His help most.
The truth is that we will sometimes face more than we can handle alone. That does not mean God has abandoned us or that our faith has failed. It reminds us that we were never meant to live by our own strength. God invites us to depend on Him and receive help from the people He places around us.
🌿 Hebrews 5:14 tells us that discernment develops through training. We train ourselves by pausing before accepting something simply because it sounds biblical, comes from someone we respect, or has been repeated many times.
When you hear a statement presented as God’s truth, ask three simple questions:
Where is this written? Can I find it in Scripture, or have I only heard people repeat it?
What does the passage actually mean? Read the verses before and after it instead of relying on one sentence by itself.
What does this belief teach me about God? Does it lead me toward biblical trust and obedience, or toward fear, shame, pride, or dependence on myself?
We will not recognize every questionable statement immediately. That is why discernment begins with a willingness to pause and investigate. We do not have to know everything, but we should care enough about God’s truth to check what we are being taught.
Reflection Questions:
Is there something you have always believed was in the Bible but have never personally verified?
When life becomes more than you can handle, do you reach for God’s strength or judge yourself for feeling overwhelmed?
A Short Prayer:
Lord, help me recognize when something only sounds biblical. Train me to examine what I hear through Your Word and give me the humility to correct beliefs that are not true. When life is more than I can handle, remind me that I was never meant to carry it without You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
