📖 Luke 18:13

"But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, 'God, be merciful to me, a sinner!'"

Dear Friend,

Have you ever avoided praying out loud because you didn't have the right words? Have you ever compared your simple, stumbling prayers to someone else's — a pastor, a worship leader, someone who always seems to know exactly what to say — and quietly decided yours weren't good enough?

You are not alone in that, and Scripture actually speaks directly to it.

🌿 In Luke 18, Jesus tells a story about two men who went to pray. One was a religious leader who knew all the right language, listed his own righteousness, and prayed loud enough for everyone to hear. The other was a tax collector who couldn't even lift his eyes, and all he managed to say was, "God, be merciful to me, a sinner." Jesus said it was the second man — not the eloquent one — who went home right with God.

🌿 Communion with God was never about having the right vocabulary. Paul even tells us that "the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words" (Romans 8:26). If the Holy Spirit is willing to take your wordless groaning straight to the Father, you were never required to sound like a preacher to be heard.

🌿 Jesus Himself warned against thinking many words or polished phrases were what mattered: "when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words" (Matthew 6:7). What God is after is honesty, not performance. A five-word prayer said in truth reaches Him just as fully as a beautifully composed one.

• Have you ever held back from praying because you felt your words weren't "good enough"?

• What would change if you believed your simplest, most honest words were already enough?

A Short Prayer:

Lord, thank You that You never required eloquence from me — only honesty. Where I've held back because I didn't have the right words, teach me that You hear the tax collector's simple prayer as fully as any other. Amen.
