For much of my life, the story of the Wise Men felt simple and familiar.
Three kings. A bright star. Beautiful gifts.
But as I grew older, that same story stirred deeper questions in my heart.
Who were these men really?
Why does Scripture call them Magi?
If they followed a star, doesn’t that connect them to astrology?
And how does that fit with our faith?
Rather than dismissing those questions, I’ve learned to sit with them. And what I’ve discovered has only deepened my awe of Jesus — not diminished it.
✨ What Scripture Actually Tells Us
Matthew records:
“Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the reign of King Herod. About that time some wise men from eastern lands arrived in Jerusalem, asking, ‘Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star as it rose, and we have come to worship him.’”
— Matthew 2:1–2 (NLT)
Scripture never calls them kings.
It never tells us how many there were.
And it doesn’t glorify their background.
What it does reveal is this:
They were seekers — and God responded to their seeking.
✨ Who Were the Magi?
Historically, the Magi were educated scholars from the East — likely Persia or Babylon. They studied astronomy, history, royal signs, and ancient writings. This is important to understand:
They were not practicing astrology as we define it today.
They were not reading horoscopes or seeking personal destiny.
Instead, they noticed an extraordinary sign that aligned with long-known prophecy:
“A star will rise from Jacob; a scepter will emerge from Israel.”
— Numbers 24:17 (NLT)
God was not endorsing star worship.
He was revealing Himself.
✨ The Turning Point: When the Sign Gives Way to the Savior
This is what stands out to me most now:
God meets people where they are — but He never leaves them there.
The Magi were drawn by a star because that was something they could recognize. God used what was familiar to lead them toward truth. But once they reached Jesus, something profound happened:
The star was no longer needed.
Scripture tells us:
“They entered the house and saw the child with his mother, Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him.”
— Matthew 2:11 (NLT)
That is the turning point.
They did not worship the star.
They did not linger on the sign.
They worshiped the Child.
And then Scripture adds one quiet but powerful detail:
“When it was time to leave, they returned to their own country by another route.”
— Matthew 2:12 (NLT)
They went home a different way.
Encountering Jesus changes direction.
Grace leads to renewal.
Revelation leads to repentance — not through fear, but through truth.
Jesus welcomed them as they were, but He did not leave them unchanged.
✨ A Childhood Memory: Faith Passed Down Through Story
This part of the story brings me back to my own childhood.
Growing up Puerto Rican, my mother passed down a cherished tradition rooted in her heritage. On the night before Three Kings Day, we would place grass in a small box — sometimes a shoebox, sometimes whatever we had — and slide it under the bed as an offering for the camels of the Wise Men.
By morning, the grass would be gone…
and a small gift would be left behind.
Some may say this is imagination. Others may dismiss it as unbiblical. And it’s true — the Wise Men were not magical beings who appeared in the night.
But here is what I understand now:
That tradition didn’t teach me magic.
It taught me giving.
It taught me expectation.
It taught me that the birth of Jesus mattered.
Long before I understood theology, that story connected my heart to the coming of Christ.
✨ Gratitude for the One Who Told Me First
As I reflect on those memories, my heart fills with gratitude for my mother. She was the first person to expose me to the story of the birth of our Savior. Through her culture, her traditions, and her storytelling, she planted the earliest seeds of faith in my life.
She didn’t explain everything perfectly — but she made Jesus known.
And God used her faithfulness to begin a journey that would continue to unfold for years.
That is the beauty of spiritual legacy:
God often meets us through the love and obedience of those who come before us.
✨ From Story to Truth
Just like the Magi…
God used something familiar to draw me in
But He didn’t leave me there
He led me from story to truth
From tradition to transformation
**Jesus meets us where we are.
His truth is for everyone.
He welcomes all who seek Him.
But once we encounter Him, we are renewed — and we choose a new way forward.**
“Anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!”
— 2 Corinthians 5:17 (NLT)
🌿 Reflection: Faith and Legacy
Who was the first person to tell me about Jesus?
What traditions or stories helped shape my early faith?
How am I passing faith forward — through words, example, or simple acts of love?
What “new way” might Jesus be inviting me to walk today?
🌿 Closing Prayer
Father, thank You for meeting us where we are and gently leading us to truth.
Thank You for the people who first told us about Jesus — parents, grandparents, and faithful voices who planted seeds long before we understood everything.
I am grateful for the legacy of faith that has shaped my life.
Help me honor that legacy by walking in truth, leaving behind what no longer aligns with You, and choosing the new way You set before me.
May my life reflect worship, gratitude, and obedience to Christ alone.
Amen.
✨ A Final Invitation
The star was not the miracle — Jesus was.
And the same Savior who welcomed the Wise Men still welcomes every heart that seeks Him today.
💬 I’d love to hear from you:
Who first introduced you to the story of Jesus?
